Our ethos is one of originality, creativity & support. We love to accompany a project from start to finish, working creatively across an entire production from its early conception right through the completion of the final VFX shots. We are able to provide multiple services during all stages of the production process.
We work with directors and producers to create a unique look for their ideas, and specialise in delivering concept art packages at pitch stage. We create previs and matte paintings for clients directly as well as for VFX houses at post-production stage, as an out-source vendor.
Our company’s core ideology is that by incorporating pre-production and post-production under one creative umbrella, a project can gain a stronger and more cohesive look. This approach also helps making accurate decisions earlier in the process which is proven to be more cost-effective in the long run.
We have over 10 years worth of design, art direction & concept art at our fingertips - If you would like to see more specific genres of work, please contact us here and we will send more examples.
Every project starts with a good sketch - so we like to develop doodles and layout sketches early in the process. Whether it be a scamp, a storyboard, or an idea for a key frame, we believe that a good foundation in drawing can ease the creative process. It is a quick way to explore the different directions a project could take, and can lead to great ideas!
Concept art is very much the first phase of production. It allows a designer, director or producer to visualise their ideas. They can use the resulting art to communicate their ideas to the rest of the creative crew and to distributors/clients. Painting Practice has an outstanding concept team with a strong sense of design, lighting and more importantly storytelling.
Character design is a uniquely challenging discipline which can be applied to both animation and live action. Our artists have tackled everything from man eating triffids and aliens, to villainous highwaymen and elegant robots! Also see below some personal work from our talented concept artists Nandor and Sammy, to give you a flavour of what our team can achieve!
Painting Practice has a long history using and designing props and miniatures. We know what it takes to deliver quality props, from choosing the right materials to finding the most efficient manufacturing. Our prop-making experience varies from building a miniature office for a Diet Coke advert to designing a real, working, hover-board for Lexus.
Painting Practice loves motion graphics! We aim to fulfil the in-camera needs required for motion graphics as well as VFX. We have broken new grounds with our original, subtle and thought provoking work across 19 Black Mirror films. We consider motion graphics to be an integral part of the design and vfx process. A hidden gem at the heart of every project.
Our production design and art direction service supports projects from commercials to long form drama and film. We have a talented pool of Designers, Art Directors and motion graphic designers who accompany us on each of our set design projects. Our team knows exactly how best to integrate the use of VFX tools into the art department process.
Painting Practice often produces construction drawings for its set design and prop work. We often originate the 3d assets directly at the concept art stage, helping us to visualise the sets in 2D. We can often re-purpose those assets for Matte Painting stage, making the process more economical and more accurate.
As part of our overall working process we have a very strong 3D visualisation department. Much of our work demands that sets, props, and environments be visualised in CG for a higher understanding of their complexity. Our work now extends into the virtual as we push the boundaries of set design through the VR experience.
Some ideas just need to be seen in full and in sequence - that’s where our previsualisation team comes in. The previs department is well versed in animation, live action and technical previsualisation. Whether it is complex stunt and VFX work or fully realised animatics for a market audience, we can turn ideas around fast and efficiently.
Digital matte painting fits neatly into our production ethos and our pipeline. Much of our work in this field is first delivered as a conceptual design and then carried through into post by our matte painting team. We are capable of handling most work including 3D projection and 2.5D work.
Much of what we do at Painting Practice extends into the world of visual effects. As a studio we are largely focusing on closing the gaps between the art department and the VFX department. Painting Practice now supports both VFX design and art direction along with VFX supervision and production.
Plan V is Painting Practice's virtual studio that allows production staff to remotely explore 3d environments alongside typical pre-visualisation tools.
