In 2016, we collaborated once again with production designer Gary Freeman, this time working on Allied. The film is a romantic thriller set during World War 2, directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Stephen Knight. In 1942, Canadian intelligence officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) meets French Resistant fighter Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard), sent on a secret mission in North Africa. Their love story is threatened by the brink of war as Marianne is accused of being a German spy. The couple embarks on a dangerous journey to clear Marianne’s name. In this exciting production, our role was to provide concept art for different interior and exterior sets. Our Senior Concept Artist Rafael Martin led the team that created those beautiful designs, and helped define the tone, colour palette and mood of the film. Allied is a very powerful story, centred around two lovers trying to survive war. By being involved long term on the project, the team and I had time to create some very emotional and poetic images.
In one image, we played with the subtlety of a woman’s shoes as she walks across London - by only showing her shoes, we keep her mysterious and make the audience wonder who she is.
