LEXUS HOVERBOARD

Production Company: Smuggler

Director: Henry-Alex Rubin

Production Designer: Joel Collins

We love challenges. In fact we can’t resist them. So when Smuggler asked us to help them create Marty’s levitating hoverboard from Back to The Future II, it was impossible to say no. Using Maxon’s Cinema 4D, our team designed the Hoverboard and the skatepark for Lexus’ fourth Amazing in Motion campaign, and helped make the dream of generations come true...

The film was directed by Henry-Alex Rubin and shows skateboarder Ross McGouran riding the Hoverboard around a purpose-built skate park in Barcelona. Lexus has worked with experts in super-conductive technology to create one of the most advanced Hoverboards the world has seen. The Hoverboard uses magnetic levitation to achieve frictionless movement. It combines liquid nitrogen cooled superconductors with permanent magnets, and allows Lexus to create the impossible. Wrapped in a design that is uniquely Lexus, Joel Collins and the team at Painting Practice designed the Hoverboard featuring the iconic Lexus spindle grille signature shape, using materials found in the luxury car brand from the high tech to the natural bamboo.

The Lexus hoverboard originally comes from Back to the Future - I think it is fascinating to see how sci-fi can challenge engineers to actually manufacture technology from films.
