COMPARE THE MARKET

Campaign: Compare The Market

Agency: VCCP

Director: Darren Walsh

Production: Passion Pictures

Production Designer: Joel Collins

Art Director: Robyn Paiba

Since 2009, Painting Practice has been helping Agency VCCP and production company Passion Pictures design the world of meerkat Alexander Orlov. We have been working on the campaign since the beginning, from the early days of “Sergei” and “Puppets” to the design of Frozen-themed baby Olegs last Christmas. We have provided production design, set builds, matte painting and prop design to most of the Compare the Market adverts. Here’s a selection of our work across the years, working on one of television’s most successful advertising campaigns. Our latest Compare the Meerkat advert involves Aleks and his fellow Sergei on a romantic cruise, re-creating everyone’s favourite moment in Cameron’s Titanic. See the video. The Street of Ambitiousness
The Street of Ambitiousness
The Street of Ambitiousness in 2010 was our first major venture in enhancing the set design in post, which included the 10k matte painting for the layout of the town. This painting involved some great working parts in the form of winches and pulleys in the distant street.  The brief was to recreate the setting for a Medieval Russian Market Street. The entire street was dressed by our team and then later extended digitally by our Matte Painting Department. Additional props were also created by our artists, namely the portraits seen both on the cart and in the shop. Combined together the overall effect was huge success, adding more depth and production value to an already successful campaign.

Maiya Spying Campaign
Maiya Spying Campaign
In 2013, we created some matte paintings for the Maiya Spy Campaign. Passion Pictures supplied us with the plates of the train and asked our team to transform the surrounding landscape into something more picturesque, with a feel of the Russian Urals . We hightened the colour and saturation to give the spot a nostalgic ‘postcard feel’.

Aleks’ mansion needed a CG makeover. In this spot Aleksandr is performing a duet with comedian Robert Webb who plays the role of rival entrepreneur and CEO of Compare the Market. The two characters are putting aside there differences in an attempt to further clarify the distinction between Compare the Market and Compare the Meerkat. The Painting Practice matte painting team were challenged with altering the real mansion to reflect the Russian architecture seen in previous spots.

Circus
We turned the set location into a classic Circus stage where Sergei was working after his resignation. We are glad he’s back at CTM now!

This little project was great fun! We first went through a series of rough sketches offering up differing scales until we finally settled on this great, Ken Adams, inspired environment. The globe was animated in the final shot and the whole thing looked fantastic!

Compare the Market really hit the jackpot with their witty Meerkats campaign. People are familiar with the Meerkats and love seeing them on screen.

They have almost invaded our lives - my children have the toy versions and always get super excited when they see Compare The Market adverts on TV. They are very proud that their mum helped make these adverts happen!
