Nike ‘The Last Game’ not only targets football aficionados – through its imaginative script and stunning visuals, it attracts lovers of animation, and seekers of good stories. It was a real pleasure helping Passion create this beautiful advert as everything was so ambitious, from the plotline to the overall design. A challenge Painting Practice relished!

Painting Practice worked alongside Passion Pictures to deliver both art direction and matte painting for this beautiful little spot for James Wellbeloved. The team were involved very early on by helping to secure the project at pitch stage with a couple of key images that the client fell in love with. The story centres around a young boy and his dog who survive day to day by busking oh the rainy streets of ‘Mega City’. Gradually, they save enough money to realise what we believe is the boy’s dream. But in a final twist we realise that the dream wasn’t a new motorbike, it was in fact a train ticket to the countryside where the duo can finally be free from the oppressive city.

Tale of Contour starts in the Arctic and brings the audience on a journey through festive China, sunny Brazil and summery New York City to celebrate 100 years of the iconic contour bottle...

Since 2011 we’ve journeyed through 13 Black Mirror stories (and counting!), each episode completely unique in its graphics, VFX and production design. Since its early days, the show has grown in size and budget, giving our team a chance to surpass itself on each new episode. Black Mirror is our biggest gig, and we are extremely proud of it!

The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy holds a special place in our hearts as it inspired Joel Collins and Dan May to create Painting Practice back in 2004. At the time, VFX techniques were being developed across the world, and our cofounders were hungry to get involved. In 10 years, the company grew into a successful studio working with the best talents across the globe, each project being more ambitious than the previous one. Here’s to the next 10 years to come, and beyond!

We were already very excited for the Rio Olympic Games, the main event of last summer - but we got even more excited when Passion Pictures called us to help them design the next BBC Olympics advert. We had depicted Rio before in Nike’s ‘The Last Game’, celebrating the 2014 Football World Cup. This time, we departed from the favelas to explore the Brazilian jungle, where animals train in the shadow of our athletes...

Painting Practice has been involved in more than 15 Compare the Market adverts. With Joel Collins as production designer, the studio has followed Aleksandr Orlov through his multiple adventures, designing the locations he travels to. We cannot wait to see where Aleksandr is going to take us next - we wouldn't miss one of his adventures. Simples.

Disney is an inspiration for all of our artists, and we have collaborated with them many times - from Maleficent to the upcoming Beauty and the Beast. When Sky Movies asked us to create concept and matte paintings for their new ident, our artists were brimming with ideas. A perfect blend of 2D-looking animation and live-action shoot, this ident spans across 90 years of Disney/Pixar magic, enchanting both children and grown-ups.

It was a pleasure working on Allied, the latest Robert Zemeckis starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. Our Partner and Senior Concept Artist Rafael C. Martin collaborated with production designer Gary Freeman to build a unique tone for the film, and provided some beautiful concepts to define the film’s key locations.

Triffids was the first production that allowed us to put all our combined skills to the test. The company had gained experience and new talent, and was able to offer producer Stephen Smallwood the full package of an art department: from conceptualizing the first triffid right through to completing six of the finished VFX shots. All three partners had a key role in making this movie, from Production Designer, VFX Art Director and Digital Matte Painter. Painting Practice had a strong involvement across the entire production of this modern take on John Wyndham classic SC-FI thriller. Painting Practice shares the Bafta with our very own Joel Collins who was awarded a Bafta for Best Visual Effects on The Day of The Triffids.

Painting Practice worked closely with Pete Candleland and Sam Mason of Passion Pictures NY to create environmental concepts for Coca Cola’s international Christmas commercial. The story was split into two areas of design; the hyper real anduper detailed Santa’s workshop and the stylised vignette world of Santa’s morale tales. The inspiration for Santa’s spaces was one of clutter and chaos, we wanted to give the feeling that Santa like everyone else could be a little overwhelmed at christmas but still make the spaces look warm and welcoming. All the environments where sketched out first before committing to simple 3D layouts.

How far would you go for the one you love? Collide, produced by Joel Silver, Ben Pugh, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Rory Aitken, Daniel Hetzer and directed by Eran Creevy, is full of action, passion, fast-paced car chases and extravagant characters – everything you need to make a thrilling film. To pay for his girlfriend Juliette’s (Felicity Jones) medical emergency while abroad, Casey (Nichoals Hoult) has no choice but to help an eccentric gangster (Ben Kingsley) in a drug heist. After a failed attempt, he travels across Europe to save Juliette from the hands of a cruel drug lord (Anthony Hopkins), racing against time and going beyond the impossible – all for love.
