3D Concept Modeller: Dan May
In 2014, we set up a small team of Concept Modellers to work on Alfonso Cuaron’s ground-breaking “Gravity”, helping Production designer Andy Nicholson. From working on space suits and space walking packs to visualising several props and environments, Painting Practice were honoured to help Framestore design some of the film’s most spectacular set pieces. Our work had to be heavily researched and based on real space technologies. Designs had to be methodically pieced together without losing its artistic style. Once the visual puzzle was solved the 3D assets were then used by Framestore’s Pre-vis Department and various pieces were broken out for CAD drafting. Much of the film’s photo real sequences were created digitally. It is a testament to Framestore’s groundbreaking VFX work and Alfonso’s stunning vision that the end result is so immersive, a truly believable experience. We are very proud to have played a part in the very complex machine that made this film happen. Read this article if you want to learn more about the production design of this unique film:
