Nike ‘The Last Game’ not only targets football aficionados – through its imaginative script and stunning visuals, it attracts lovers of animation and seekers of good stories. It was a real pleasure helping Passion Pictures create this beautiful advert. Everything was so ambitious, from the plotline to the overall design - a challenge Painting Practice relished! We provided concept art and 3D for the sets, building a colourful world around our heroes.
The diversity of the sets were a great challenge, from the visually-busy favelas of Rio to the grey plastic world of the clones. We visualised the different sets our footballers relocate to (fishing harbour, calm windmill desert, quirky hairdresser...), designed the Temple of Football and the festive stadium where our heroes beat the Perfect clones. Nike The Last Game gave us the opportunity to showcase our range of skills, from layout sketches to concept art to 3D build to matte painting. It was the first time we provided full art department services for an animation project. It marked the start of a very exciting adventure for us that continued with BBC Rio Olympics, James Wellbeloved and the upcoming adaption of Watership Down...
Working with Painting Practice on Nike: The Last Game was a great experience for me as a director. The team is thorough in their research, highly collaborative and have the talent to give a broad range of execution styles. They are a big reason why The Last Game was so well received. The art direction that they brought to the table gave the film its unique character and really helped set the tone for the piece.
I'm lucky to have had them as part of my team and I'm always looking for new projects that we can collaborate on. Dan May smells though and they should do something about that.
